Dessert Party for the 850Race Team
Most people said it couldn’t be done but our own “Coach Dave” Battison and Brian Culbert recently accomplished the “impossible” physical feat of running 600 kms in six days, supported by local physiotherapist Eddy Betinol. Come out to a Dessert Party on Friday October 16th to hear their incredible story, and how the 850Race Team raised over $110,000 in support of HealthyKids International’s Global Child Health Program, a SickKids initiative designed to improve children’s health in Sub-Saharan Africa. Check out their website www.the850race.com.
The Dessert Night on Friday, October 16th at 7pm at Queneesh Elementary School will feature some delicious desserts and coffee or tea for $10 per person, $30 per family, with all proceeds going to help achieve their fundraising goals. For information marilyna@shaw.ca
Strathcona Nordics Annual AGM / Ski Swap
Don’t forget the ski swap and AGM on Nov 1st. Trade in your equipment, find something new and find out more about your club at the AGM. Rabbits parents may want to make this their first stop for gear. Ski Tak Hut will be attending the swap this year with some used gear for sale and samples of new gear in case you don’t find anything used.
We need volunteers to help with the ski swap and the lunch; so please email sueblox@live.com to sign up. Remember – volunteers that make these events happen!
Two New Programs This Year
Learn To Loppet Program
The Learn To Loppet course is for people that have never been in a Loppet before and for people who are looking to improve their experience. There will be five on-snow sessions leading up to the March 27th Vancouver Island Loppet. Topics covered will be technique and course management including warm up and start, proper nutrition and hydration, ski preparation and selection. Each session will consist of at least one hour on snow training and 45 minutes of in-lodge work. It will start at 6:30 pm at Raven Lodge. The coach will be Rick Morson, our Club Sponsorship and Fundraising Director who is also a Level 2 certified coach, with Head Coach Dave Battison making guest appearances. The cost is $99.00 which includes the Loppet entry fee; participants are responsible for their own trail fees.
Powder Pack
This program is for skiers who have graduated from the Rabbit Program and wish to continue to spend their Sunday’s skiing and improving their skills with friends. Fun and social skiing are the main focus, while exploring the mountain trails. The program will run Sunday’s, 10:00 to 12:00.
Rabbits
The Rabbits program is in need of 12 new coaches this year. If you think you might be interested sharing in your child’s ski experience in this way either as the primary coach for a group, or co-coaching, please consider taking the Introductory to Community Coaching Course on Saturday Dec 5th, and the morning of Sunday Dec 6th. This classroom based course will allow you to coach the Bunny groups. The next step, allowing you to coach in the Jackrabbit Level 1-4 groups is the Level 1 Community Coaching Course. This course is a combination of classroom and on snow instruction, held the evening of Jan 1st , and all day on the 2nd and 3rd. Enthusiasm is the most important criteria for getting kids moving on skis, so come learn to refine your own ski techniques and how to teach these skills to the kids. Please contact Laura Johnston at dl_johnston@shaw.ca for more information.
Rabbits early bird registration deadline is Nov 30th, and regular priced registration deadline for Rabbits is Dec 31st. Please be sure to check out the Rabbits Volunteer Opportunities section of the club website before you begin your registration process on Zone 4 (check next week).
L2T Coaching Courses
The L2T program provides tools and develops skills that a coach can use to (1) create a fun, team oriented environment that will motivate children to achieve their personal goals in sport and develop a lifelong interest in the fitness and health benefits of cross country skiing, and (2) deliver a well rounded sport program with an emphasis on skill development to children 9-12 years of age. The prerequisite is Introductory to Community Coaching Course and Community Coaching Course.
In the L2T Dryland component (16 hours) coaches are taught about developmental age, physical literacy, team building, athletic components (aerobic fitness, speed, etc) nutrition, how to design their own sport program, adventure based activities, roller skiing, and planning a practice. Prerequisite: Community Coach. The dates are November 13th (6-9pm), 14th (8-4pm), 15th (8-2pm). We will be scheduling the L2T On Snow component (16 hours) in January (tentatively set for Jan 8, 9, 10th). This workshop is designed to train coaches on team management, supporting athletes at a competition, teaching and learning, equipment selection, ski preparation and how to effectively teach ski technique.
