A Big Weekend for Strathcona Nordics

This weekend is the annual launch of the active season for most of our members, with the Ski Swap/AGM on Sunday, November 1st.  Further details are below, and this event is always a good opportunity to not only find great deals and unload unwanted gear, but also a fun way to reconnect with other skiers and club members as the temperatures start to drop.  Organizers have done a great job of putting the event together, and the Board of Directors hope to see a solid turnout at our AGM on Sunday.  This year Ski Tak Hut will have a display booth, and as always there will be lunch and snacks available.  See you there!

Club and Program Membership

For those athletes currently doing any dryland training (and soon to be on snow) the new club year starts on Nov 1 therefore you need to become club members for the 2009/2010 season and register for the winter program(s) in order to be covered by insurance.  To clarify for some people, the devo, jr racers and masters racers have two programs dryland which goes from May 1- Nov 1 and the winter program for which we are currently registering. You can register on Zone 4.

Rabbits

Registration into the Rabbits program, as always, will be limited by the number of coaches.  We are in desperate need of new coaches this year.  There are only 11 coaches returning or joining the Rabbits Program this year, but we need 24 coaches to run a program the size of years past.  We need at least 13 more people to contact Laura Johnston at dl_johnston@shaw.ca by November 23rd to indicate their interest in supporting their child’s ski program this year by taking the Introduction to Community Coaching course on Saturday Dec 5th (7 hrs) and Sunday Dec 6th (3hrs) and then many of those to also take Level 1 Community Coaching course on the evening of Friday Jan 1st and all day Saturday Jan 2nd and Sunday Jan 3rd.  Parents, please consider coaching this year.  A high level of skill is not required, only enthusiasm, as there could be opportunities to pair you with a more experienced coach for mentoring or co-coaching with another 1st year coach.  Thank you.

Racing Team Fundraisers
The racing teams are already working hard to get to the Nationals in Whitehorse in March 2010. They are training several days a week, and they working on a few fundraisers to offset the cost of air travel. You can support your Junior Racers by:

  • Ordering a wreath ($25) and an 18-foot cedar rope ($10) to decorate your house for the holidays, Barb 250-339-1904
  • Saving your empties for the November 7th bottle drive, Marilyn 250- 338-9345
  • Buying some Hot Chocolates chocolate bars ($3/bar), Sue 250-334-3267

Go racers!
