The Olympic Winter Games are underway!!
Many thanks to Joanne Herschmer, Andrea Stapff and others who organized the club movie-night fundraiser at the Stan Hagen Theater last week.. great entertainment, yummy snacks, lots of door prizes and some profit for the club.
No doubt most club members are enjoying coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics. This is a great time to hang out with other members and cheer on all skiers and other athletes in front of the big screen at Raven Lodge. Keep an eye out for many of our local race organizers at the Callaghan Valley on the TV; Strathcona Nordics is making a significant contribution to the cadre of officials and volunteers who are who are helping to stage these Games.
Enjoy the action!!

New Officials Page
We have a new “Officials” page on our site. It has the article and photo that appeared in newspapers across the Island last week if you missed that story. We have many wonderful club officials to be proud of. If you are one of those officials, when you have a minute please send in your anecdotes and photos from your Olympic experience. We’d love to hear about it.
Loppet
The Vancouver Island Loppet is a great way to start your racing career, as a racer or as an official. It’s a fun event that our club will host on March 27. This is your opportunity to hang on to that Olympic feeling, and enjoy being a part of the biggest nordic race on Mount Washington. The race notice is being posted later this week and registration will open soon on Zone 4. We need volunteers for a variety of jobs! Please email info@strathconanordics.com
Olympic Blog
Check out this blog from Marilyn’s friend Claudia Kerchkoff-VanWijk from the Olympics. She has a great perspective in that she is on the Course Marshalling crew at Callaghan Whistler Olympic Park, and her husband Dirk Van Wijk is one of the chief groomers of the courses — lots of great insider info. Plus she is an Olympian herself from whitewater kayaking in the 80’s, so she understands it from an athletes perspective too.

Wax!
Attention all skiers! This Saturday, you have a great opportunity to revive your skis. The Junior Racing Team will be hot waxing classic and skate skis in front of the Raven Lodge from 9 am to 11am on Saturday. For $8, you can treat yourself to better glide, then go for a ski, and then join your club members in the Lodge to watch the men’s Olympic nordic pursuit race at 1:30. Remember to bring cash for your ski wax!
Rabbits
What a weekend of extreme conditions! Perhaps both the worst weather day and the best. Congratulations to the Saturday Bunny group who stayed out the longest of all the groups on Saturday! Saturday’s weather and cold kids was a great reminder to be prepared for all types of weather. Keeping the kids dry often means keeping the kids warm and thus happy. Also, eye protection is very important for safe skiing, either sunglasses or goggles should be worn.
Sprint Races are coming up in just two weeks, March 6th and 7th. Two more volunteers for Sunday are needed to run these races for your children. Please contact Mark at markburger@shaw.ca if you are able to assist with these very short sprints – if you can start and stop a stopwatch, or say go, you are qualified to run this event. You can also volunteer for this or any of the other unfilled positions through the club website home page Rabbit Icon.
Please return your Bunny (if not yet completed) and Jackrabbit booklets to your coach this weekend. Orders for new booklets will be done next week, so don’t delay, or you may miss out on getting a booklet this year. If you have lost your booklet, they can be replaced for a cost of $5. Please let your coach know asap, preferably by email.
