October is here, and registration is open! 

October is here, and registration is open for Strathcona Nordic Ski Club programs for Winter 2013! Earlybird pricing continues through to November 30, but don’t delay — register now! You can also find Ski Swap information below.

See program pricing and information using the Programs links on the sidebar. Remember there is also a membership fee, which covers things like insurance for all SNSC activities for 1 year. When you register online, HST will also be added.

Season’s Passes – alert!

If you are purchasing a season’s pass this year–don’t delay! Sunday, September 30 is the last day for earlybird prices on Mount Washington season’s passes. Remember, you need a Mount Washington nordic season’s pass or nordic trail pass to ski on the trails this winter.

You can buy a season’s pass, or a special 10-week SNSC program pass (buy it in early January), or a day trail pass (every time you go skiing). Follow these links:

Program Registration

SNSC winter program registration opens on Monday, October 1 online. Starting on Monday, there will be a link to registration on the club website, StrathconaNordics.com. Visit the Programs page to learn more about winter programs.

Saturday programs begin on Saturday, January 12. Sunday programs start up on Sunday, January 13. Programs run for 10 weekends. Racing programs are currently running dryland training sessions. If you are interested in racing programs, contact us. info@StrathconaNordics.com

Calling All Coaches!

All new and returning coaches are asked to attend a meeting on Sunday, October 21 from 9-11am at Queneesh Elementary school in Courtenay. Head Coach Dave Battison and Coaching Director Doug Herchmer will present exciting news from the world of cross-country ski coaching!

Swap & AGM

Mark Saturday, October 27 on your calendar! It’s the annual SNSC Swap and AGM–a great opportunity to find some gear and catch up on club news. This year we are swapping and meeting at Mark Isfeld School in Courtenay. Here’s the schedule:

  • Waxing clinic, 11-11:30
  • Join us for lunch, 11:30-12:15
  • AGM, 12:15-1pm
  • Nordic gear swap, 1-3:30
  • Unsold gear pick up, 3:30-4:30pm

Don’t miss the Wax-o-rama! You can bring your classic and skate skis to the Junior Race team, and they will prep them for the new ski season. You can enjoy a treat from the Devo Bake Sale table while you wait!

Note: Everyone is welcome! People attending the AGM get in first to the ski swap. All gear must be in reasonably good condition.

Teck Regional Fall Dryland Camp

Last weekend, 31 racers enjoyed the cross-country ski race camp held in the Comox Valley and sponsored by Teck Resources Ltd. Coaches Dave and Andrea led the participants through two days of roller ski drills, strength and balance exercises, and games. The camp ended with a gruelling race up the Strathcona Parkway. Congratulations to all participants and to the uphill race prize winners:

14 km: 1st – Jamie Wasteneys, 2nd – Sheridan Meckert, 3rd – Alec Stapff
10km Boys: 1st – Connor McGrady, 2nd – Ross Lamon, 3rd – Mark Grant
10km Girls: 1st – Ariel Becherer, 2nd – Avalon Wasteneys, 3rd – Morgan Meckert
5km Devos: Annelise Henckel, Taz Oldaker

Race camp participants admired the new Strathcona Nordics Ford truck.

Vancouver Island – Teck Regional Fall Dryland Camp

Teck Regional Fall Dryland Camp — Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23, 2012


All Vancouver Island nordic ski racers are invited to attend the Teck Regional Fall Dryland Camp in the Comox Valley. Activities will include Roller Skiing, Running, Ski Specific Strength, Dynamic Warm Up, Plyometrics, Fun Group Games and Activities, as well as a fun Time Trial for all ages.

Sunday, September 24
10:00am meet at Base of Mount Washington for a Roller Ski Time Trial (Age and Distance appropriate categories for everyone.)

Cost: Free for SNSC Race Team members, $20 for all other participants
Equipment needed:
Roller Skis (or Roller Blades), Helmet, Poles, gloves
Running shoes, Water Bottles
Clothing specific to the weather (Rain jacket, pants, etc.)

Happy September to everyone! In the photo below, some SNSC Sunday hikers find the ski conditions “marginal” — However, it is time to think about winter 2013! We have lots of news for you in this issue. Don’t miss the list of important dates.

Mount Washington nordic season’s passes

Mount Washington nordic season’s passes are on sale, and you only have until September 30 to cash in on earlybird savings! You can learn more and buy passes on the Mount Washington website.

If you plan to ski outside of your Saturday or Sunday program day, you want to consider purchasing a season’s pass. Alternately, you can buy single trail passes, or if you are skiing mainly on your program day, special program passes are available for your program day. Remember, you need a Mount Washington Seasons’ pass or a trail pass to be on the trails in the winter!

Program registration

Registration opens on October 1 for winter 2013 programs! Starting at that time, you can find a link to online registration on the club website. The deadline for earlybird prices for programs is November 30.

Mark Saturday, October 27 on your calendar! It’s the date of the Annual Strathcona Nordic Ski ClubAGM & Nordic Gear Swap. This is a great opportunity to catch up on nordic news and exchange some great cross-country ski gear. Look for more details about the event coming soon!

Clothing

If you are looking for some fun, functional, and inexpensive cross-country ski clothing for yourself or your children, we will be selling last year’s Strathcona Nordics jerseys, tights, and jackets. You can buy these at the AGM & Swap on Saturday, October 27. All proceeds go to the racing suit program.

Last Sunday’s run/hike began at the Raven Lodge.

Run/hikes

Join us on Sundays this fall as we continue the Everyone Welcome run/hike series! We usually meet at 10am on Sundays and explore the trails for 2-3 hours for fitness and fun. Join the running group or the hiking group. Everyone welcome! Check this homepage and the calendar on the sidebar for the location and other updates.

This Sunday, September 16 we will run and hike at Elk Falls in Campbell River. Meet at 9:55 at the logging road bridge at Elk Falls park, just past Haig Brown House.
