We have lots of exciting news this week – a note from Len in Sochi, a link to beautiful photos from last weekend’s race, the final day of the Rabbit season, Loppet news, an adaptive ski clinic, and more!
Registration is open for the 32nd Annual Vancouver Island Loppet, which takes place onSaturday, March 29! A loppet is a great way to end your ski season – either as a skier or a volunteer.
For skiers, challenge yourself to a good, long ski with your community; and for volunteers, join the fun and cheer the hundreds of skiers on as you hand out refreshments, act as course marshals, or assist with course marking and food station set up.
Loppet Volunteers Needed!
We urgently need volunteers to help with the loppet on Saturday, March 29.
Course marking: Two or more for course set up and take down Help with signage and course marking, setting up transition zones and feed stations.
Time needed 7 – 10 am and 3 – 4 pm (approximately). If you have lots of energy you can help and still ski the Loppet.
Marshals: A number of volunteers needed as course marshals.
Time needed: 9 am for duration of the race until approximately 2 pm.

If no one steps up this week to coordinate, there will be no food or drink, and if 6 others don’t step out to run the stations, no food will be handed out.
If you are not racing, this is a great opportunity to have a very fun and social time at the Loppet. Everyone loves the food stations! Coordinating the Food Stations is simple, as there is now an “instruction manual” for putting it all together.

It’s hard to believe our last Rabbit Day for both groups will be on Saturday; somehow it feels like this season just got started! Nevertheless, our big double header Rabbit Tourney is scheduled forSaturday March 15, where groups from both Saturday and Sunday join together for a morning filled with fun games and races. Get ready for the Mighty Coach Tow, the Snowball Biathlon and more!
We are still short volunteers to help with the lunch, as well as extra help for the stations. If you are available to help, please let Alix Wilson (email@example.com) know, or jump in on Saturday and lend a hand! We are also looking for a couple more large pots to prepare hotdogs and hot chocolate in, as well as large camping water jugs.
Lunch will consist of hot dogs and hot chocolate donated by Thrifty Foods, as well as a potluck spread provided by all the Rabbit families.
▪ If your last name starts with A-M, please bring a lunch-type dish or vegetable platter.
▪ If your last name starts with N-Z, please bring a healthy dessert or fruit platter.
▪ Also remember plates, utensils and cups!
Remember that although the Rabbit season is coming to an end, there is still plenty of ski season left! Get out on the snow and use the skills you’ve learned so far this winter! Also consider participating in the Annual Loppet, which will be held on Saturday, March 29th; it is always a lot of fun with something for every age group!
Skiing is believing!
On Sunday March 30, VISAS and Strathcona Nordcis are holding a ski clinic for people with a physical disabilities. All skill levels and ages 8 years and up are welcome – from complete beginners who want to try it out to athletes who wish to improve their technique.
Cross country skiing can be enjoyed either sitting or standing, by many people including those with paraplegia, amputations, blind or visually impaired, cerebral palsy, MS, brain injuries, and more.
Cross country skiing is good exercise, so although you don’t have to be an athlete, a certain amount of physical fitness is needed. In order to use a sit ski you need to be able to push yourself along with poles, so you should be able to use a manual wheelchair and in order to ski standing up you should be able to walk at least 400m using canes or no aids.
Cost is $15 which includes trail pass equipment and instruction. Sign up to enjoy some fun in the snow!

Teck Coast Cup

Unfortunately, high winds and heavy snow prevented the race organizers from running the Teck Coast Cup #4 sprint races on Saturday, March 8.

What a difference a day makes! On Sunday, March 9, race officials, support crews, and racers enjoyed blue skies, sunshine, and 3.5 C temperatures. 135 racers between the ages of 4 and 60 participated in the mass start free technique race, and three coastal clubs were represented: Hollyburn, Strathcona Nordics, and Whistler.
The distances ranged between 1KM for the youngest Atom category and 7.5KM for Junior boys and men’s categories. The awards took place following the races in the sunshine in the nordic stadium. The Strathcona Nordics put in a great showing at their home race, but in the end Hollyburn took home the pennant for the aggregate award for the Teck Coast Cup series. Thank you to Hollyburn and Whistler Nordic for coming out to the island to race with us!

Len Apedaile dropped us a line from Sochi where he is working as the Technical Delegate for all cross-country ski events, including biathlon. Len writes,
“It has been an eventful two weeks in Sochi. After a week of intensive preparation to get the field of play into shape following the Olympics, we began competition last Saturday and have been going steady ever since until today which was an official training day and our first ‘day off’.
The weather has been the main challenge with warm spring temperatures and melting snow. Everyday we had to bring in fresh snow to bolster sections of the courses and stadium, and we used salt to firm things up several days in a row. Shades of Vancouver 2010! Yesterday, however, we had 40 cm of new snow during the sprint competitions and are now enjoying the first taste of winter. I hope everyone had had a chance to take in some of the events on TV or the web. We have had some really great competitions.
This being our first night off, I’m currently at the Canada – US semifinal sledges hockey game. 1-0 for the US but it’s early in the first and the Canadian crowd is dominant and boisterous.”

Alec Stapff, Avalon Wasteneys, and Coach Dave Battison have arrived safely in Corner Brook, Newfoundland with the BC Ski Team. Competition begins this Saturday in the 2014 Ski Nationals. You can follow the events and results on the Ski Nationals 2014 website.

The VI Biathlon Club are having a Spring Biathlon Race on March 16. Cost is $15 for members of Biathlon BC, $20 for non members, which covers insurance and use of rifle, ammunition supplied. Refreshments included. Prizes! Trail pass required.
They say, “No experience? No problem!” Their instructors are available on Sunday during posted practice times to help familiarize you with the biathlon rifle and shooting protocol. The race will be conducted in a safe manner, and everyone is welcome. They aim to have FUN!
Minimum age 10, no maximum!. Five loops of 1 km and 4 shooting bouts per person. Please note, the deadline for entry is 12 noon on March 14. Visit http://www.vibiathlon.ca for more info.
