BC Cup #2

Last weekend, our team of Junior Racers enjoyed another successful round of BC Cup performance. 16 athletes made the trip to Revelstoke for the BC Cup #2. Very warm weather prevailed – somewhere between soggy snow and rain – but all our racers demonstrated excellent mental skills in how well they handled the challenging and changing conditions.

Notable performances came from Tallon Noble, finishing with two golds in the individual classic and skate races, Connor McGrady also medaled both days earning a bronze and silver, Gabe Gledhill and Stephen Lamon both came away with podium finishes, a silver in classic for Gabe and a bronze in skate for Stephen. In addition Aiden Noble finished the weekend with a 4th and 5th place performance and Carson Damery and Madeleine Guimond both came away with a 5th place performance. And as our lone masters athlete, Rupert Wong put in two stellar (and long) performances coming second in both the classic and skate events.

All in all, fantastic results and a great weekend! Many thanks to our team of coaches, wax techs, drivers, cooks, and parents!

Well done!

Congratulations to Tallon Noble on being selected by CCBC to attend the 2015 National Championships with the BC Ski Team in Thunder Bay, Ontario!

Wisconsin

Two members of our ski community are currently in Wisconsin, USA for the IPC Nordic World Championships. Strathcona Nordics President Len Apedaile is at the international ski competition as the race director for nordic and biathlon events.

Marc Lyster, manager of Nordic Operations for Mount Washington, was recruited to groom the trails for the prestigious event.

The IPC Nordic World Championships in Cable, Wisconsin are “the biggest gathering of international Nordic skiers since Sochi.” You can read more about the event on the Paralympic website.

Invitation to all kids born in 2002/2003/2004/2005

As you are probably well aware, our club is hosting the Teck BC Midget Championships this year at Mount Washington!

This is the first time in the history of our club that we are awarded a provincial championship. It will be a very fun, action-packed weekend with three races for each child, a catered awards banquet, entertainment, participation gifts, and draw prizes. In previous years, our Devo team has traveled to Callaghan, Kelowna, Salmon Arm, and Revelstoke for this fun, race weekend. Having the race on our home turf is excellent way to take in this experience at a low cost of $60.

If your child is born in 2002/2003/2004/2005, the Devo coaches invite you to register for the Teck BC Midget Championships! You will receive full support from the coaching group. You can sign up through zone 4.

On Saturday February 7, there will be an individual classic race in the morning and in the afternoon there will be relay races. The relay races consist of four members. Two racers ski classic and two racers skate ski. This is an action packed race, with many of the team wearing fantastic costumes.

On Sunday February 8, there will be sprint races. First part of this event is a time trial, followed Kings Court elimination races.

Please join our Devo team for a weekend of fun! Don’t be intimidated. The focus of this race is fun and friendly competition with skiers from around the province.

See the race notice here.
Register on Zone 4 using this link for the races and register on this link for the relay race.
Contact Coach Berend if you have questions. langlaufstrathcona@gmail.com

Best wishes

Good luck to Avalon and Tallon who are on their way to the Haywood NorAm & Western Canadian Championships in Canmore, Alberta to go toe-to-toe with the fastest racers in the west!

Best wishes for clear and fast skis to the Devo team members who are heading to the Callaghan Valley, Whistler Olympic Park this weekend for the Teck Coast Cup races. Go teams!

Dave Battison Memorial Stadium

This is the last chance to make a contribution to the stadium sign to commemorate Dave Battison and his lasting contribution to our club, our community, our athletes, and our children. Mount Washington has generously offered to name the stadium after Dave; however, without a sign to indicate this; the dedication would largely go unrecognized.

Members of our club and ski community have already generously donated to the sign initiative, but we are still in need of some funds to help cover the cost of the sign. If you can make a contribution to the Dave Battison Stadium sign, your support will be greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. Contact Rob rdtrainor@gmail.com

Lodge etiquette

Please remember that we share Mount Washington’s Raven Lodge with other mountain guests and share these tips with your children:

▪ To refill your water bottles, use the water fountain at the bottom of the stairs in the Raven Lodge, not the water jugs in the cafeteria.
▪ Before you go out to ski, remove your bags, coats, shoes, and boots from the tables and chairs, and place them neatly at the side of the room.
▪ Keep the doorway next to the fireplace and all doorways clear. These are fire exits.

We have an URGENT NEED for Instructors for the CIBC Wood Gundy School XC Ski Program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 9am – 2:30pm. BC Cup 1

Congratulations to our adventurous racers and support crew who braved freezing rain and bitter cold to race in the BC Cup 1 races in Prince George last weekend. There were very solid performances from all team members. Coaches noticed an increasing depth of performance from the whole team!

In the Saturday Sprints, an exciting race where anything can happen and tactics are key,
our club saw great results from all racers. Highlights include: Avalon Wasteneys – 1st, Tallon Noble had fastest qualifier but broken pole in A final to finish 4th, Ross Lamon – 3rd, Stephen Lamon – 2nd, Matthew Salmon had very solid sprint performance, showing constant improvement, and Lynn Swift – 3rd in masters distance race.

In Sunday’s distance race, which was a challenging course, with a long uphill climb and fast, exciting downhills, our club saw more great results from all. Highlights here include: Avalon Wasteneys – 3rd, Tallon Noble – 1st, Connor McGrady – 4th, Ross Lamon – 4th, Aiden Noble – 3rd, and Stephen Lamon – 4th.

Coach Andrea says she is super happy with the whole team who handled tough weather conditions really well and are on target for continued improvement.

The team looks forward looking to BC Cup 2 in Revelstoke in three weeks and the Western Canadian Championships for Avalon and Tallon in Canmore in two weeks! Go team!!

Raffle winner

The lucky winner of the raffle basket is Ingrid van Kesteren, an occupational therapist at Campbell River Hospital.

Devo coach, Berend Henckel, decided to give his co-workers at Campbell River Hospital a special Christmas card. Instead of giving them a traditional Christmas card, he gave his colleagues a raffle ticket for a basket of ski goodies.

Berend says Ingrid was very excited to receive the basket, and he wouldn’t be surprised if Ingrid became a member of our club.

Thanks to the Master Racers and Ski Tak Hut for the generous donations to the raffle basket!
