SNSC News — December 27, 2015

Dear Club Members,

Happy Christmas and New Year!

It’s so exciting to see the snow back and all the trails open – the Lake Trail is superb after a years hiatus! With the snow back all of our winter programs are a go and will be starting up over the next couple weeks. These include:

Dec 27: Coaching Refresher and Meeting 9:30-2pm
Dec 28-31: Teck Regional Snow Camp
Sat Jan 2: BC Winter Games Zone 6 Trial and Club Race
Jan 2-3: Intro to Community Coaching course
Jan 8-10: Community Coaching Course
Jan 16-17: Club Programs Start: Rabbits, SNAP, Junior Rec and Masters Rec

With the poor year last year and snow uncertainty leading up to this season, our club numbers are down so there is a lot of space left in all of our weekend recreational programs. The registration deadline for most programs is December 31. For more information and to register please visit the club website at [](

See you on the snow!

Club President

With racing season upon us we are looking for extra hands to help us run things smoothly! Officiating is a great way to help out, be a part of the action and support our club athletes and coaches.

There are a range of roles Officials can take on, these include marking out the race courses and stadium, timing and keeping track of the racers, helping organize the race, and handing out and collecting bibs.

We are currently looking for Officials for the upcoming BCWG Trials & Club Race on January 2nd!!

Please contact for more information or to volunteer for a couple of hours.

Any donors interested in making a charitable donation in exchange for a tax receipt will make the donation to Cross Country Canada using the Donation Form. The form must indicate an intent that the funds be directed to the Dave Battison Memorial Athlete Development Fund.

This must be done by December 31st in order to receive a tax receipt for the 2015 fiscal year.

Note that donors may not receive advertising or sponsorship recognition – just a thank-you. Funds generated through this project cannot be directed to any individual – in other words bursaries and travel grants are out, but these may be funded from non-charitable fundraising. This avoids the possibility of any direct link between donors and recipients.

For full details on the rules please see the CCC Charitable Donations Policy

On Monday December 28th from 2:30 to 4pm at the Vancouver Island Mountain Centre (VIMC) we will be having a potluck for all camp participants and families. Please bring a plate to share – healthy snack, baked goods, fruit, veg, appetizers. Whatever tickles your fancy after a long day of skiing!

Last day for registration is December 31st! Come race or volunteer and be a part of the fun!

SNSC News — December 10, 2015

Recent weather has been busy providing us with lots of snow to play and ski in. Thanks to this gift of plenty, Mt. Washington will be opening tomorrow, Friday, December 11th!

As James Brown says (oh so soulfully) “Get up there! Get on up!”

Wax those skis! The weather is forecasted to hover around -1 with light snow in the morning and afternoon.

The Strathcona Nordics racing team had a very successful weekend at Whistler Olympic Park in their first race of the season. Our Head Coach Andrea Stapff says, “It was a fantastic start to our 2015/2016 racing season and I’m really proud of our group of athletes. Our racers set out to make an impression, and they all succeeded in doing so.”

The team came home with a grand total of 20 medals and big smiles.

Our troops are heading to Vernon this weekend! From December 10th-13th the Strathcona Nordics will be competing in the Haywood NorAm Buff Sprints at Sovereign Lakes. This is a big race, with teams from across BC, Yukon, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec attending. We wish our racers luck and good weather!

There is still some space available in Coaching Courses being offered in January before the Rabbit Program begins. This is a great opportunity to improve your skills as a coach and and confidence on skis. Both programs focus on experiential learning, and are interactive and fun!

January 8-10 – CC – Community Coaching – 16 hours – includes 2-3 hours on Friday night. For coaching children age 6-9.

You can attend one or both courses, but you must take ICC before you take CC course.

Note the Club pays the course registration fee, in return for your commitment to do some coaching for one of the programs.
