Strathcona Nordic Ski Club is committed to training and supporting our club coaches so that we can provide our members with the best possible learning environment and foster a life-long enjoyment of skiing.
Being a coach is rewarding and a whole lot of FUN! You don’t need to be a superstar skier. Enthusiasm, a willingness to commit some of your time and some competency on skis, both uphill and downhill, are the key ingredients.
You should be able to ski most green and blue trails confidently. But don’t worry, many coaches started out uncertain of their abilities and found that the club is a supportive environment in which to develop your coaching and skiing abilities.
The club offers 2 ways in which to gain or improve your coaching and skiing skills – training and coaching certification through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) of Canada and Coach Refresher sessions open to all club coaches regardless of level or ability.
The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is used by ski clubs across the country. It is a competency-based approach, and focuses on experiential learning and the needs of the participants. The program is designed with the Long Team Athlete Development (LTAD) Model in mind and certification is based on the coaches abilities, and doesn’t rely on purely “text-book” knowledge. Many coaches taking this course find that their own abilities improve throughout the learning process!
Coach Refresher sessions are offered throughout the on-snow season and are for any club coach at any level. They focus on technical skill development in both classic and skate techniques as well as skill and activity development progressions that you can use in your own coaching sessions. These sessions are led by Head Coach Andrea Stapff or certified club coaches. They are an excellent opportunity to work on your own skiing, get to know your fellow club coaches and in particular learn from and share your knowledge with a dynamic and fun group of people.
