The club hosts a weekend race event that takes place during the SDP season as part of Cross Country BC’s Regional Coast Cup Series. The Coast Cup, held on our mountain, is a fun, low-key race and ski activity aimed at younger and beginner skiers. This weekend event is included as an official part of the Rabbit SDP – both for Bunny Rabbits and Jack Rabbits. Saturday Rabbits participate in the Saturday race, Sunday Rabbits participate in the Sunday race (there are two different races). Jack Rabbit Plus skiers can participate in both events just as our Devo Team and the youngest member of our Junior Team do. I’s a great way for skiers to set new goals for themselves, experience the thrill of facing and feel the energy of an all club event.
Race registration and race fees for this event are included in the Rabbit program fee. The club takes care of entries for all Bunny Rabbits and Jack Rabbits. Skiers are entered in their relevant age category: Atom 1, 2 or 3, Peewee 1 or 2, Bantom 1 or 2, Midget 1 or 2.
Race distances vary between less than 1 km and 3 km depending on the age of the skier and can be either “free technique”, meaning the skier can use either the classic or skate technique or “classic technique”. Race start formats are usually either a mass start or individual start, with 15 second intervals between skiers. Other potential race formats any given year might be a skier cross style or sprint style. Final race formats will be posted one month prior to the event weekend.
Coaches prepare their groups in the sessions leading up to the event and on the race weekend lead their skier through a warm-up, provide pre-race encouragement, racing tips and enthusiastic cheering throughout! Bunny Rabbits or any skier in need of a little more assistance over the distance can have their parent ski with them on the course for that extra bit of encouragement and support.
Any keen Jack Rabbit who is not in the Plus program but would like to race on both days is encouraged to do so! Parents will need to register their child for the additional race on the Zone4 website. There is a nominal race fee entry for this additional entry. Stay tuned to the club newsletter and website or look for notices posted in Raven Lodge for information on how to register when the time comes.
