The Junior Race program guides dedicated youth toward the pursuit of excellence in Nordic sport. It follows the Sport Canada – Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, with athletes at the Training to Train and Learning to Compete stages of development.

The aim of the program is personal challenge where competition is seen as a process through which athletes learn to be prepared, participate with intention, be supportive of teammates, do their very best, and reflect on what has been learned. This team consists of 12-18 yr old athletes interested in pursuing the skills necessary to become competent skiers and competent competitors, whether at the local level or the provincial and national Junior level and beyond.

  • Juniors work hard and follow a monitored and comprehensive program that is designed to meet each individual’s goals.

  • Juniors learn that through hard work, perseverance, and teamwork anything is possible.

  • Juniors use general, multi-sport and specific training modalities to achieve exceptional fitness.

  • Team members develop self-discipline and a great work ethic as they continually challenge themselves.

This year-round program consists of both summer and winter sessions including 3 regional training camp opportunities in May, September and December, as well as 2 summer training camp opportunities: a multi-club, inter-provincial camp in early July in Kaslo, BC and a late August camp where we aim to take advantage of the sport and adventure options available on the Island. Juniors at the “Learn to Compete” stage also have the option of one of the best summer ski experiences in Canada – the Beckie Scott Haig Glacier camp based out of Canmore, AB. All of these activities aim to provide athletes with opportunities to have fun, train hard, be active together as a team and strengthen friendships and bonds among teammates.

The primary focus for this team is the BC Cup Series. Younger Juniors may also compete in the Regional Coast Cup Series and older Juniors may also compete in the NorAm, Western Canadian Championships and Ski Nationals. Our very own Vancouver Island Loppet rounds out the racing season for our dedicated Junior team.
