MASTERS RECREATIONAL (Learn to Loppet Program)
This program is for recreational skiers who want to improve their skiing technique (classic and skate) and fitness – in a fun, social, and group environment – through a season of coached sessions.
The program focuses on both classic and skate ski technique over the course of 8 weeks (the first half of the sessions will be classic technique and the last half will be skate technique) and lessons are lead by qualified club coaches. The program wraps up with participation in the annual Vancouver Island Loppet.
Masters Recreational Learn to Loppet: (choose Thurs, Sat or Sun at registration)
Thursday/Saturday/Sunday Sessions run from 10-11:30 am
The program will start with 4 classic sessions and then 4 skate sessions. It will conclude on March 22 with included entry into the Vancouver Island Loppet.
This is not a beginner program; skiers must be able to ski both classic and skate at a minimum the Ponds loop. If you are new to classic/and or skate skiing we recommend you register for lessons with Mt Washington. This program is for those adults who wish to improve their skills in a fun, coached learning environment.
Getting ready for winter
Cross country skiing is a physically demanding sport. To enjoy your experience on snow, it is recommended that participants embark on a regular fitness program that emphasizes aerobic activity and strength. Examples of aerobic activity include: walking, running, biking, hiking or swimming for a minimum of 30 mins/day, three times a week. To optimize your strength, exercises that use your core muscles (abdominals) such as planks, pushups; lunges and squats (for leg strength), all will help you transition more easily onto your activity on the snow. Doing strength exercises twice a week will be good physical preparation. You can find many good training exercises online to help you prepare for a great cross country ski season.
